As one of the more exciting and fundamentally sound emcees to emerge from Chicago’s ever-growing pool of rappers, The Boy Illinois is on the fast track to stardom.
Fresh off a coveted slot as an opening act for Lupe Fiasco on a tour hitting over 30 cities, The Boy Illinois, aka Illi brings us his dazzling collection entitled Jean Baptiste. Of course, the mixtape’s title is a tip of the hat to Jean Baptiste Dusable, who is widely acknowledged as the first resident of Chicago.
On the concise 10-track mixtape, Illi shows off his lyrical dexterity via introspective themes that everyone can relate to over choice beats the draw you in and make you nod accordingly. There will be comparisons to Lupe made, but is that really a bad thing?
With recent press coverage from the likes of BET, MTV Rapfix, Sway In The Morning, and Diddy’s new Revolt, it is clear that Chicago won’t be able to keep Illi to its self much longer.
