On the heels of the virally successful, See My Heart, Not My Past T-shirt campaign and three widely popular novels, Trent Shelton has released his fourth motivational e-book, Know Your Circle. The former Washington Redskin’s player and founder of the testimonial website, RehabTime.org is continuing on his mission to inspire and aid those on a journey of self-discovery and growth. Rolling out TV caught up with Shelton to go more in-depth about his obstacles in the past, which ultimately led to him changing him life.
Tell us a little bit about RehabTime?
It’s kind of crazy that my career in the NFL wasn’t too good, [I] got cut from multiple teams, bounced around a lot and it kind of led me to a dark place. At that point, I remember being in my room and the first thing that came to my mind was the word rehab. Right, and for an athlete it’s about putting strength back into weakness. When you’re injured, you go to rehab so you better yourself, and if we are all honest with ourselves we have something we can better. And so it was never my point to start an organization; it was for me. And at that point, I just said I want to rehab mind body and soul; putting strength back into my faith, putting strength back into my leadership, putting strength back into my body fitness wise, just trying to be the best me and it grew from there.
See My Heart, Not My Past; what’s that about?
See My Heart, Not My Past, I think is a book that everyone can relate to. You know I wear that shirt and first people look at me like what did you do in your past, your tattoos and dreads, but we all have a past. And that statement simply stands for this: making my today’s better than my yesterdays and having faith that my tomorrows will be better than my today. So it’s a symbol of daily growth and so that’s what the book is about. It’s a 30 day process to help you become who you want to be and leave behind who you use to be. A Heart That’s Meant To Love You is basically telling people to embrace who you are. We live in a world of opinions left and right, people trying to change you every single second. Be yourself, embrace yourself; you give your gift to the world. You’re criticized, misunderstood; so your purpose is about being you. In A Heart That’s Meant To Love You, they [are] going to try to change you for the better but they [are] not going to change you so much that you’re not yourself no more; so that’s basically embracing yourself.
And so you also have line of shirts?
Yes I do. I have a line of shirts that kind of just started just with the team, just putting the sayings on the shirt and I would wear it and tweet it out and put it on Instagram and people are like I want a shirt too; I want a shirt, and so I realize people need positive messages that uplift. The crazy thing ’bout it is that I really don’t promote the shirts hard or the book hard, but I think when you living something — your purpose—I feel like you’re a magnet and people just want to be a part of it. So the shirts sell like crazy, the book sells like crazy, without even promoting it too much.
What does the shirt you’re wearing today mean?
“Live it, Breathe it, Be it,” this for me means basically ‘walk out what you talking’ because these days a lot of people talking and don’t live it. A lot of people typo it on social sites now and don’t live it; post a quote they don’t believe in, so this is about being that person. It’s about a lifestyle. RehabTime is not a movement. To me, movements die. It’s a lifestyle; something I will live forever. And so, whatever it is that you believe in, make sure [that even] if you don’t say one word ever, people should tell you what you’re about and you shouldn’t have to cover up with your words. You should let your actions speak, let your life speak. That’s what it’s about.
