Marilyn Mosby
Marilyn Mosby has barely been in office four months and already she has a case that has received national attention. Mosby is the Baltimore city state’s attorney who will be prosecuting the six officers involved in the death of unarmed Black male Freddie Gray. Gray was injured while in police custody under circumstances that have now been ruled a homicide. Mosby, 35, won election to the office in 2014 after a contentious campaign. This is her first time serving in an elected post.
Previously Mosby was an insurance lawyer for Liberty Mutual Insurance and she also worked for five years as an assistant state’s attorney. Mosby is married to Baltimore City Councilman Nick Mosby, who represents the West Baltimore area that has been the scene of recent protests over the death of Gray.
For Mosby, law enforcement is not new, both her parents were police officers as well as her late grandfather. Mosby also has been a personal victim of crime as she witnessed the violent death of a family member outside of her home when she was younger. Mosby is a mother of two daughters and a product of an HBCU school, Tuskegee University, where she met her husband. Mosby, the youngest chief prosecutor of a major city in the country, stated in her acceptance speech, “As a Black woman who understands just how much the criminal justice system disproportionately affects communities of color, I will seek justice on your behalf.”
Now that time has come for the young prosecutor as not only Baltimore but America looks to her for justice for Freddie Gray.
