If you were searching for a new feature film to add to your summer lineup, then look no further! Word on the cinema streets is that Dope is the new age Boyz N the Hood. Make sure you mark your calendar for June 19 as this will be the only day you and your friends can catch Dope in select theaters.

Leaders of the new school Shameik Moore, Zoe Kravitz, Asap Rocky, Chanel Iman and Quincy Brown lead the star-studded cast in the Sundance hit. A film using social media platforms to target a digital generation filled with modern day hip hop heads. The 2015 comedy-drama was directed by Rick Famuyiwa also known for producing classic Blockbuster films Brown Sugar and The Wood. Famuyiwa uses comedic relief to shed light on the racist trappings that much of America, unfortunately, still holds for African American men.

Dope was shot in the streets of Inglewood, California centered around Malcolm (Shameik Moore), an adolescent ’90s hip hop enthusiast living in the “bottoms,” a neighborhood notoriously riddled with crime and drug-dealing gangs while trying to get accepted into the college of his dreams, Harvard University. Malcolm and his two nerdy high school friends Jib (The Grand Budapest’ Hotel’s Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) wind up experiencing several unexpected events after attending a wild party leaving Malcolm in possession with a backpack full of narcotics wanted by a ring of drug dealers. This endless goose chase over drugs turns Malcolm from a nerd to a Dope kid who finds his true self. If you don’t go see Dope you will certainly miss out on one of the most exciting and compelling movies of the year. –lauren martinez
