Lalah Hathaway live

I have seen Lalah Hathaway live at least a dozen times since being a fan of hers for over 25 years. I have been blessed to enjoy her gifts even at an intimate setting like the Village Underground but last night for me was the best of many great performances that I have witnessed. Starting with the band, who were funky but very tight. The background singers incredible both in harmony and when given opportunities to solo. The legendary guests performers on stage were magical Chick Corea, Freddie Jackson, and the goddess Valerie Simpson. Lalah took us through a musical journey, performing selections from her catalog, tributes to her legendary father, and gave us a funk band tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire and the Gap Band, brilliant jazz scatting, soulful vocals, with no wasted notes and total connection and communication with her audience. She’s truly entertaining and her concert was reminiscent of a master class in how to pace a show and connect with the audience. Yes, I was beyond happy when she gave a special acknowledgement and shout out to my sis and her college friend, Robin Small (a great vocalist in her own right) and Isaac Clemon. Opening act, Jonathan McReynolds Muzik who labels himself a Christian Gospel artist. He was a perfect fit and even though he was on stage solo with a guitar, he left the audience wanting more. Less is almost always more for opening acts. Great night and from the posts I saw last night I will catch the second season premiere of “EMPIRE” in a few days. There’s no rush, LOL!. #livemusic #realisngers #realartistry #honestmusic Oh, yeah, it was sold out. –dara seans
