Chance The Rapper has officially dropped his highly anticipated project, Coloring Book. It’s available for “free 99” on iTunes. The project features Kanye, Lil Wayne, Jeremih, Jay Electronica, Future and Justin Bieber.
Chance’s rise to the spotlight of the music industry is one that represents a realization as to how different the music industry is now. Chance released the critically acclaimed Acid Rap three years ago and has not looked back since. Features with proven heavyweights in the industry, most notably his collaboration with Kanye West on the song “Ultralight Beams” on Kanye’s project The Life of Pablo, have placed a stamp of his influence and how empowered and independent artist can be.
Coloring Book is a palette of bright hues and feels like a church service in a club. Chance splashes colors all over the project, starting with the intro that is not an intro “All We Got” featuring Kanye West and The Chicago Children’s Choir. It picks up where “Ultralight Beams” leaves off and serves as the perfect backdrop for the project. Donnie Trumpets’ lush horns fill the track.
“THIS FOR THE KIDS AND THE KINGS OF ALL KINGS”
-Chance The Rapper
Coloring Book is raunchy, explicit, beautiful and spiritual. Chance takes chances (pardon the pun) and colors outside the lines. Songs like “All Night” featuring Knox Future is a party hit and blends seamlessly into the song “How Great” featuring Jay Electronica and My cousin Nicole that features a choir that sounds as amazing as any Sunday church service.
Chicago is in a desperate place when it comes to violence and the disenfranchisement involving Black youth. This project will speak to them and is necessary to raise the level of consciousness. Chance has answered the call with this release. An amazing piece of art has been created. The anticipation was warranted and we are blessed.
