The Plug is a film that takes moviegoers through all the twists and turns of the drug business, and how being involved in it can strain your personal relationships. The three themes of the movie are money, murder and loyalty. This comes with a big decision one of the characters in the film, Rilow, has to make on whether to kill his best friend Derrick, or to be killed by Mook, one of the biggest drug kingpins since BMF.
“This movie was like nothing I’ve ever done before, and the reason I say that is because this is the first time I’ve ever written a script already knowing what the storyline was,” Mathis said during the Q-and-A session following the screening.
The movie gave off a very realistic trap vibe, which is honestly what you’re looking for when it comes to a movie like this. Drugs, money, women, and the trap language were all incorporated in the movie, and that added to the level of reality that is portrayed in the film.
Mathis was also able to capture a comedic undertone, which caused the audience to laugh while still realizing the situation at hand is serious.
Before the screening, which took place at 444 Theater in Atlanta, the audience was pleasantly surprised with a brief performance of Atlanta’s very own CyHi The Prynce and Fort Knox.
