Detroit-bred rapstress Kash Doll premiered her highly anticipated video, Ready Set, featuring Big Sean on Monday, Aug. 5, 2019. The video premiere took place during a private brunch, located at the 24 Grille restaurant in downtown Detroit and Kash Doll was on the scene to greet every single one of her Kash-bratz-fans.
In the fast-paced, race-track themed video, Kash Doll and Big Sean can be seen dancing on an empty race-track, racing with one another in old school cars and showing off their Detroit style by sporting Cartier “Buffs” sun glasses. The video also features cameo appearances from Dreezy, Sevyn Streeter and Detroit’s own Nique Chelle (dancer for Beyoncé). You can also see the Detroit rap stars ending the video by doing the legendary Detroit “Blade Dance”. The video was directed by Jesse Ray Diamond, while Teyana Taylor is credited with creative director.
In a sit down with rolling out, Kash Doll talked about her video Ready Set, her collab with Big Sean on the song, her upcoming album, and giving back to Detroit.
Tell us about the song Ready Set.
Ready Set is a motivational and inspirational song. I wanted to let people know if I can make it, despite the things I’ve been through, they can do it too. I’m a D girl, so I’m determined.
Where did the song’s inspiration come from?
Big Sean. Actually, I sent him a song and he said he thought [the Ready Set] song was better. And I said I did too. Sometimes, as an artist, you only know what you know and what you’re going through. I didn’t think outside of that. So, when he sent me the song, I was like “Oh. Of course!”
We see that you do a lot to give back to the youth of Detroit but it doesn’t get a lot of shine. Tell us more about how you give back to the community.
Now, if I said f*ck the youth, it’ll be big. But since I’m actually giving back to the youth, it doesn’t get much shine. But I don’t care. I don’t do it for [recognition] anyway. I do it out of the kindness of my heart. I was once a young girl from the D that wished I had somebody to help send me to prom. I help girls on a regular though, and I don’t even mention it. I’ll send someone some money for their dorm. I do a lot of that. I do at least three prom give-a-ways every year, one year I did five. But, I’ve been giving back since 2015.
Tell us about the new album.
The album is done. It’s timeless, classic, and meaningful music. There’s music for every mood that you’re in, especially for women. You know, [there’s a song] for when you like a dude. I got a song for when you don’t like him. I got a song for when you want to like him. I have a song for when your mama just pissed you off, and you’re on your way to work, and you need to listen to it to calm you down. The album is very relatable. Everything about the whole album is organic.
When is the album set to come out?
It’s coming soon. It’ll be out fourth quarter. Ready Set is my first radio song, so I’m building momentum right now. People know me, but they haven’t heard me a lot because of the situation I was in, when I was putting out music and they were taking it right back down. I haven’t had a chance to get my feet wet for real. So, I just really want people to catch my vibe before I drop an album on them. I know Detroit’s ready because they heard a lot [of my music]. Even though I’ve done shows everywhere – I’ve been on BET, I’ve done Beyoncé, and Drake, and Rihanna’s my girl – but I don’t feel like [people] heard me. So, I want them to hear me, and then we’re going to take it to the next level.
