In your leadership role, what is your commitment to the community?
Since I was a young adult, I’ve worked on campaigns to help our community. I volunteered through the United Auto Workers, AMVETS, my church and as [an] HOA president. I worked the polls for many years to ensure people had the right to vote. Community service has always been in my heart. It’s an honor to represent the Greater Indianapolis and state NAACP organizations and to continue to serve our community.
What would you say are the Greater Indianapolis NAACP’s top programs?
The NAACP has identified six game-changers representing the major areas of inequality facing African Americans: economic sustainability; education; health; public safety and criminal justice; voting rights and political representation; and expanding youth and young adult engagement. The Greater Indianapolis branch is working to address all of these at the national, state and local levels. See www.naacp.org/about-us/game-changers/.
Why should someone want to support your organization financially or in other ways?
With more than 2,200 branches and units across the country, the NAACP offers many opportunities to get involved. Donations always help, especially at the local level. Although we’ve achieved many civil rights gains, the NAACP is still fighting for equal opportunity. And if we’re not careful, our nation will backslide. By becoming a member of the NAACP, you can help overturn systemic racism and ensure we truly have freedom and justice for all.
