Lawyer for alleged Nipsey Hussle shooter says client had mental health problems

The trail for Eric Holder, the man accused of shooting Nipsey Hussle to death over two years ago, continues to stagnate but it seems like Holder will finally have his day in court in December 2021. Holder and his attorney, Deputy Public Defender Aaron Jansen, appeared in Los Angeles court on Tuesday, June 28 for a hearing.

“A lot of the work was done by my predecessor. Hopefully, by the end of the year, maybe early December, we can go to trial,” Jansen told the New York Daily News.


Nipsey Hussle, whose real name was Ermias Asghedom, was gunned down in the parking lot of The Marathon Clothing store he owned on the corner of Crenshaw Boulevard and Slauson Avenue in South Los Angeles on March 31, 2019. Surveillance footage showed the shooting occurred in broad daylight, with two people falling to the ground and bystanders fleeing for their lives. The grand jury indicted Holder, 31, on one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder and weapons charges.

He has pleaded not guilty.


Jansen further stated that Holder has a few mental issues and that he had recently lost his mother.

“He does have a significant mental health history. One of the things affecting him [in March 2019] was that his mother had just passed away. He was pretty despondent.” Jansen added.

Holder’s case has been postponed several times because of the COVID-19 pandemic and he refused to come out of his cell several times. The judge previously assigned to the case also retired and Holder’s former lawyer Christopher Darden stepped down after his family received death threats.
