How Anycia went from unemployed to viral Atlanta rapper connected to Drake

The story of 1 of the underground’s brightest stars

Anycia is grateful.

One of Atlanta’s rappers generating the most buzz right now in the underground scene, alongside fellow female rappers like KARRAHBOOO, Vayda, Mercury, Woo Da Savage, Muddy Mya and Dono, her ascension to fame has been nonstop since June.

On June 3, she posted a snippet of her song “so what,” a Ciara sample produced by Popstar Benny.

The clip immediately went viral and caught the attention of NBA legend Kevin Durant, who commented, “This it,” in an endearing fashion. On June 7, four days after “so what” was posted and a day after Durant’s comment, Anycia posted that she took her first trip to a major label for a meeting. That label was Sony Music.

A few months later, she released the popular single “BRB,” and said Drake reached out to her.

On Sept. 30, Anycia used social media to reflect on her five-month journey.

“Bro,” she posted on X, formerly known as Twitter. “This time, last year, my car was on its last leg and @karrahbooo had just f—— her s— up. We were between jobs, tryna figure everything tf out. Now, 1 year into this music s—, and she’s on tour and I’m going on my first tour! [The] only girls on our tours, too! GOD DID!”

She also performed at Slangfest that night, and took a moment from the whirlwind to speak to rolling out about her meteoric rise.

What have the past couple of months been like for you?

Everything’s been happening really fast, but overall, I’ve just been overwhelmed with joy, I’ve been ecstatic and I’m just happy to see where I go.

When is the Waka Flocka Flame track dropping?

That ain’t dropping for a little minute, but it is dropping, though. I have a lot of stuff before that drops.

What was it like to have Waka on a song with you?

Legendary. Amazing. It made me feel like I was stamped. I f— with Waka. I love Waka. Growing up, I loved Waka, so it’s just a blessing, for real.

How do you stay grounded during such a fast come up?

Just staying genuine. Staying positive. Walk in my truth, and everything will fall in line whenever you’re doing the right thing.

Congratulations on being a part of the Veeze tour. What are you looking forward to most on your first tour?

Thank you. I’m really just looking forward to seeing how many people f— with me for real. And I’m looking forward to seeing what happens after that. I’m dropping the tape right after that. So, I’m just seeing where the s— takes me, for real.

What’s the best advice Drake has ever given you?

Honestly, he’s so cool of a person, we don’t even really talk about s— like that. For the most part, he’s inspiring in the way that he really doesn’t give a f— about anything. He showed me you really don’t have to give a f— about anything. He’s just living his life, being a genuinely good person and walking in his truth.
