As a Georgia native, it was only right that Grammy-award-winning gospel singer Tasha Cobbs Leonard stopped by the State Farm Arena to perform during halftime of the Atlanta Hawks game. Leonard spoke with rolling out about building faith in God, her experience working with Nicki Minaj, what to look for from her this year.
What is your message for those looking to build their faith in God?
I believe that this is the year for us to believe. Sometimes you just have to remind yourself to believe in God and what He’s called you to do and believe in what He’s put inside of you. Believe in yourself that you can do this.
What does MLK Day mean to you?
There are a few things that Martin Luther King Jr. represented. Number one was unity and faith. I believe putting focus on that day reminds all of us about the significance and importance of unity, and of course, the significance and importance of believing in God and having faith. I appreciate the fact that the entire United States of America comes together to say “Hey, we’re gonna celebrate this day. We’re going to celebrate what he stood for, and we’re going to remind ourselves that these two things are important.”
How was your experience working with Nicki Minaj on the song “Blessings?”
That’s my girl. It’s always just a blessing to be in her presence. She’s a genius, which we all know, and a lyricist out of this world. Her rap game is like nothing you’ve ever seen, but she’s also an incredible producer. Every time I’m in her presence, especially working on music, I learn and grow from her experience, and we have a chance to talk about the God that we both love. That means the world to me.
Could you give us a quick prayer to start the year?
Father, anybody who may be watching this, who may hear this, and anybody that’s under the sound of my voice, I pray now that you would give them the strength, the courage, and the faith to believe in what you’ve called them to do and to go for it in Jesus name. Amen.
