The NJBWC Leadership Institute’s previous cohorts have demonstrated the profound impact of structured training and supportive networks. Alumni of the program have gone on to achieve significant milestones in their careers, whether through promotions, innovative community projects, or increased representation in leadership roles. By focusing on holistic development, the Institute ensures participants leave with not only enhanced professional skills but also a renewed sense of purpose and community.

This year’s Leadership Institute features two groundbreaking additions: AI Exploration and Cyber Security Adventure. These new sessions highlight the program’s commitment to equipping participants with cutting-edge knowledge. In the AI Exploration module, attendees will delve into artificial intelligence fundamentals, exploring how AI impacts industries ranging from healthcare to finance. Meanwhile, the Cyber Security Adventure will prepare them to navigate and combat online threats effectively, emphasizing practical strategies to protect sensitive data.

The NJBWC Leadership Institute’s curriculum, developed in collaboration with Mercer County Community College (MCCC), focuses on enhancing leadership effectiveness. Participants will experience a range of activities, including assessments, workshops, panel discussions, and expert-led lectures. Key areas of focus include:

  • Workplace Politics
  • Marketing and Branding Tools

According to Tennille McCoy, NJBWC Co-Founder and Leadership Institute Chair, the program’s primary goal is to create not only skilled leaders but also meaningful connections. “This initiative is about equipping Black women to address today’s challenges effectively,” McCoy shared. By fostering a supportive network, participants can collaborate, exchange ideas, and navigate the complexities of leadership with confidence.

The emphasis on networking extends beyond the cohort itself. Graduates of the Institute often become part of a larger alumni network, offering ongoing mentorship opportunities and professional support. Dr. Deborah E. Preston, president of Mercer County Community College, emphasized the program’s role in uplifting Black excellence. “Through intentional actions and unwavering support, we are empowering women to lead boldly and achieve greatness,” she stated. The Institute’s mission aligns with broader efforts to amplify underrepresented voices in leadership, ensuring Black women have the platform and resources they deserve.

Graduates of the Leadership Institute don’t just gain skills—they also have the opportunity to showcase their growth through capstone projects. These projects are designed to address real-world issues, allowing participants to apply their learning in meaningful ways. In June 2024, the inaugural class presented their projects at a graduation ceremony held at the Trenton Country Club. Topics ranged from community development initiatives to innovative business strategies, highlighting the diverse talents and aspirations of the cohort.

This year’s cohort will continue this tradition, celebrating their achievements on June 7, 2025. The capstone presentations not only demonstrate participants’ leadership in action but also inspire others in the community. The graduation ceremony serves as a moment of recognition and celebration, bringing together families, mentors, and community leaders to honor the accomplishments of these rising stars.
