Jhonni Blaze used to dominate our televisions nightly, and now she is about to start dominating our playlists. Her latest single “Don’t Break My Heart” shows off her smooth vocals and features the iconic Method Man. She is getting ready for the Valentines Day release of her upcoming project Jhonni – Chapter 1, and she is going to shock the world with it. She stopped by Rolling Out to discuss her new single, upcoming project, and a bunch more.
Who or what inspired Don’t Break My Heart? Did someone break your heart?
No. Sometimes I just write. I like writing. I enjoy writing stories. Sometimes it has nothing to do with me. Majority of the time, actually, I’m lying. 90 percent it’s probably me. The other 10, I just be in the mood and sometimes that’s kind of how the song went with me and Method Man.
Method Man is a huge feature. Was it hard to get the feature and why was he perfect for this song?
I’ve never had a problem with features. It’s always been just off the strength. Like, really I just love videos and everything. You’re independent and I know how much they’ll be costing. And I’m not going to say the names or anything because you’ll see the features soon enough. But it’s all genuine, like real genuine friendships. And it’s not that I don’t pay for the features. It’s more of I build friendships with people. Sometimes friendships are more important than money. But there’s actually some amazing men out here, like really good souls. And they’re good people, and it sucks for them, and it sucks for good women too, because you get overlooked. You’re overlooking them because you think that type of women is a certain way. So, I just wanted to give that in the music where it’s just like Method Man’s perspective is the man guy side and my perspective is the girl side. But there’s a lot of great people out here. It’s just a lot of toxicity. A lot of toxic behavior. I was toxic. I’m toxic right now.
You release Jhonni – Chapter 1 on Valentines Day. Will it be lovey-dovey? What will we get on V-Day?
Oh, who said that the EP was lovey? Expect Everything. All emotions. It’s really just explaining what I was going through when I was making this EP. Like, what I was going through relationship wise, mentally, spiritually. And it’s my first chapter. I’ve never dropped an ep. I always drop singles. I’m a catalog artist. I do singles and they be hitting. So, it’s time to put it together and really give them a project. And every time I send music to somebody, they love it and the men really be responding. Like, if I send it to them, they’ll be like, I like this record, this record and this record. So, I think it’s gonna be a pretty amazing thing.
Who are some artists you want to work with?
SZA. Cause this your second time on my page. The first time, I let it slide. But the second time, when you said you would sit in the snow with me if it. Cause it was a POV (Point of view) Would you go back to your ex or would you sit in the snow? Because, you know, Atlanta had a little snow. I looked down, she commented, and she gave me a whole little two sentences, y’all don’t say nothing to me. It would definitely be SZA, Summer Walker, Elton John. I would have picked Prince too, because of instruments.
Would you do a song with Drake? What are your favorite Drake songs?
I think me and Drake would make a dope song. Ima speak it, speak it into existence. What was it that Teyana Taylor did the remix of? Yeah, “Marvin’s Room.” I like the old Drake. Like, he was snapping when he came out. Oh, the one that Omarion is on, “Bria’s interlude.” Oh, man, “Back To Back” was fire. And that was a diss track too. So no offense to anyone. But it’s just I like how it sounds.
