Tragedy struck this past weekend when a man fired several shots during a large fight near a Cleveland outdoor concert venue where George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic were performing, killing one person and injuring three more.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the fight broke out around 10 p.m. on Saturday, July 30, at an intersection near East Luke Park, ironically, the venue for the eighth annual Unity in the Park festival.
Local police say they aren’t sure if those involved in the brawl were among the night’s concertgoers.
“These were younger people, so we’re not sure,” said Sgt. Sammy Morris. “George Clinton is an older [artist]. We’re not going to speculate.”
According to Morris, a 16-year-old boy was shot in the head during the fight and died from his injuries on Sunday. Three others were also wounded during the fight including a 20-year-old woman shot in the neck, and a 14-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man each hospitalized with leg wounds.
A spokeswoman for MetroHealth Medical Center said that the injured woman is in critical condition while the other two victims are each in stable condition.
Police are still searching for the male suspect but do not have a description of the shooter.
Reportedly, thousands came out that night to attend the concert. It’s terrible that while so many were celebrating peace and unity in their community, those nearby were disrupting it and bringing an end to a young life. –nicholas robinson
