Al Green
The legendary singer was a soul superstar in the mid-1970s, known for smooth, bedroom-friendly tunes. But his troubled girlfriend, Mary Woodson White, committed suicide after burning him with hot grits one night after he refused to marry her. The incident shook Green and he became an ordained minister at the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Memphis. His initial attempts to maintain a secular career were unsuccessful and after a bad fall in 1979, he stopped recording secular music altogether for 10 years.
