Western media and local officials are stating that the 200 girls kidnapped recently by terrorists from the group Boko Haram are being given out as brides. According to Nigerian government news sources the girls were being sold for 2,000 naira or $12 U.S. dollars each to Boko Haram leaders near the borders of Cameroon and Chad. The Nigerian government has been totally ineffective in mounting a rescue attempt or giving the heart broken parents some measure of relief regarding the fate of their daughters.
At a recent protest rally, Nigerian senators Barnabas Remade and Helen Equine reportedly told the women, who mostly belong to the Kibaku Development Association, that they are “considering a motion” regarding the stolen girls. This caused many of the women to collapse in tears and yell in outrage at the politicians. At this point, the only hope is for parents to attempt to mount their own rescue of their daughters reported a Nigerian newspaper. Many of the families are now arming themselves and joining forces to begin searching for their daughters.
