MC Lyte has dropped a topical new track called “Dear John.” The song, described as a message to black men, features another hip-hop vet, Chicago emcee Common. Lyte and Common rhyme about the bond between black men and women, rekindling some of their chemistry from their previous collaboration, 2000’s track “A Film Called (Pimp),” from Common’s acclaimed Like Water For Chocolate album. This is Lyte’s first commercial single in 11 years and she sounds inspired.
“I feel your pain, I know you’re under attack,” Lyte raps, referencing fathers and daughters and the battle of the sexes and how it’s turned allies into enemies.
The song is the first single from Lyte’s upcoming album.
