The UNCF’s national “A Mind Is …” gala was a spectacular event. With 60 HBCU presidents in attendance, they represented the nation’s leading educational institutions. The goal was to raise funds to help UNCF send more young people to college. The theme of “a mind is a terrible thing to waste” was evident as sponsors contributed to the success of this event.
Organizations such as the Charles Koch Foundation, Macy’s and Wells Fargo were there to remind us of the value of growing partnerships. The impact of a $25 million grant from the Charles Koch Foundation and Koch Industries Inc. will help UNCF provide exemplary students the financial support they need.
The 10 year partnership between Macy’s and UNCF has created a phenomenal leadership pipeline with management and recruitment programs from institutions including Morehouse College and Spelman College. Allowing future CEOs to gain valuable work experience not only showcases Macy’s commitment to education beyond token gifts but also is a true integration of vision, scholarship and achievement.
The room was filled with distinguished award recipients and Koch Industries executive Dr. Richard Fink delivered a phenomenal speech. It was an unparalleled experience. Many should appreciate the way UNCF’s president and CEO, Dr. Michael L. Lomax, has steered the organization toward a spectacular destination, fostering a positive future while creating a universe of new scholars and corporate relationships. The event brought together HBCU graduates, supporters and corporate partners growing in their understanding of how to develop relationships to secure a brighter future.
