Joyce Littel is a bona fide legend in the Atlanta radio industry. She hosted one of the most recognized radio programs on V-103, The Quiet Storm, where she played late night R&B tunes that put the entire metro-Atlanta area at ease for 20 years. Now, she’s back at V-103, and she’s throwing a concert she birthed from her popular weekend show that has shot to #1, Jukebox Jams.
Presented by The Muddy Water Group, BriSTAR ent and Littel Concepts, Jukebox Jams is a concert-party playing the greatest house music hits of the 90s. Some of the best dance music singers from the 90s will perform: CeCe Peniston, who sang “Finally”; Robin S. from the hit song “Show Me Love”; and Sybil, who brought us the upbeat tune “Don’t Make Me Over.”
The event will be held at Center Stage on Sept. 4 at 9 p.m.
Ms. Littel spoke to rolling out and gave us the inside scoop on what we can expect from the show. Plus, she told us how her days doing The Quiet Storm has impacted her life today.
Tell me about Jukebox Jams.
Jukebox Jams is two things that were brought together. I do a radio show on Saturday mornings from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. called Jukebox Jams. I was approached by my PD (program director), Reggie Rouse, and he said, “Joyce, I want to do an oldies show and I want you to host it and come up with the name.” I just remember back in the day we used to go to the Pizza Hut and we used to go and play all the music from the jukebox. So I named it Jukebox Jams. And a young man named Mike from The Muddy Waters Group had [hosted] Jukebox Jams parties. So I had the show on the radio, and he was putting together this party — we felt the two needed to meet. So we met and decided we wanted to partner with this event because it’s what I do on the radio and it’s what he does in promotions and we felt that we were both strong enough to make it work, and that’s how it all came about.
We’re doing [it] to kick-off Labor Day weekend. We’re theming it the 90s edition of jukebox. It’s the 90s house edition because we brought in the queens of house and dance, which is CeCe Peniston, Sybil and Robin S. We’re mixing it up with live performances and we have four slated DJs that will be on stage and in the loft area. So it’s going to be one big house party, which I am looking forward to because I love house music — I can’t dance a lick, but I love house music.
I used to love The Quiet Storm. You did the show for 20 years, right?
Yes, 20 years. The funny thing is, I’m still recognized more for that than anything.
I’m sure a lot of people grew up on it.
My hair is naturally gray, and I was at a school last week and a parent that had a small child came up and she said, “I used to listen to you when I was in middle school.” I’m like, “Okay, I think I need to go dye my hair!” [laughs]. But it really is a joy to see and hear so many people talk about their experience listening to The Quiet Storm.
For me, The Quiet Storm was something where I could just wind down after a rough day.
Because I told you to. One day, this lady told me, “I haven’t been able to relax ever since you left,” and I was like, “Really?!” And so I told her to relax, and she said, “Okay, I’ve got it now.”
