Jamycheal “Weezy” Mitchell, 24, has been sitting in jail in Portsmouth, Virginia for four months at Hampton Roads Regional Jail. He was arrested for stealing just $5 worth of snacks – a Mountain Dew, Snickers candy bar and Zebra Cake – from a 7-Eleven. He was arrested in April and held without bail for this misdemeanor charge. On Wednesday, August 26, 2015, officers found his body in his cell.
Mitchell was diagnosed five years ago with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. His family claimed he starved to death for refusing to eat and take his medication.
A judge believed he was unfit to stand trial and ordered him to stay at Eastern State mental health hospital – but they allegedly there weren’t any beds available.
Adams’ aunt Roxanne Adams is a registered nurse. She tells media he practically had no muscle mass at the time of his death. “His body failed. It is extraordinary. The person I saw deceased was not even the same person.”
He lost 65 pounds and was “extremely emaciated.”
Officials deny any knowledge Mitchell had refused his medication and food.
No autopsy has been performed at the time of this writing.
