At first glance, hip-hop and Bach would go together like oil and water; however, that’s not the case. Redbull is sponsoring this culture mash and we were recently on hand to witness it at the Chicago Theatre. Flying Bach is a show that features the marriage of hip-hop dancing and classical music. Now, initially one would think that something like this would not be possible; however, as I watched the performance what I noticed was that rhythmically all things are possible. Hip-hop culture is potentially and possibly one of the most transformative cultures in the world. It has influenced everything from art to mass media to advertising and to say that it has influenced the youth alone would be an understatement. As I watched this performance, I couldn’t help but notice that it seems so natural. The movements were fluid, the music was impeccable and the show in itself was amazing. I would recommend that anyone go see what truly is possible when we merge two distinct cultures.
We asked Columbia student Samantha Fisher what she thought of the show and she said, “It’s a very innovative mix of classical music and break dancing. It’s bringing two cultures together in a very unique way. It’s a lot of fun.”
It was a lot of fun to watch, I agree. I would hope to see a bit more diversity when it comes to the culture and representation of the five elements next time.
