Watch designer Marcel Benson shares business journey to Macy’s

What business relationship have you established with Macy’s?

I currently sell my products on Macys.com.

How did you develop your relationship with retailers?

I developed a relationship with MGM by walking in one day and asking to speak to the store manager. I told my story and she was impressed but wasn’t a decision maker. I requested the information for the store’s buyer. I sent the buyer a watch along with a handwritten note. She loved it and offered me a partnership with there men’s store. For Macy’s, I attended a course at Dartmouth for small businesses where I met someone who gave me the idea to go big as it pertained to retail. I reached out to Macy’s and found out that they provided a workshop/incubator for emerging fashion brands. I applied and got in. [Ten businesses are selected out of thousands of applications.] After going through the workshop, I was able to develop key relationships and that led to them offering me a partnership.

Why is lifelong learning important to you?

Lifelong learning is very important as things are constantly changing, [and] it’s important to stay abreast of what’s going on. A commitment to learning is specifically important for an entrepreneur as it’s imperative that you are adjusting and pivoting in your business in a timely manner.
