A Second U trains former inmates to be successful through fitness

Is there a reason why more men than women have participated so far in A Second U to become personal trainers?

Women’s prisons are not as often equipped with gyms or weight rooms, which limits their access and resources while inside. A lot of the men that we work with spent their bid working out and using fitness, so they come out interested in the industry.

What would be on your wish list for the foundation’s continued success?

We’d love to have our own location where we have more flexibility [in] the services that we can provide. We’d like to be the first wellness reentry center in the country.

Your model has been very successful here in New York City. Are you considering other cities?

We know our model works and have made results in New York City. We think that our model has potential to be successful anywhere with a strong fitness hub and where people are coming home. We just started our first class using distance learning, which gives [us] the opportunity to reach people outside of New York and know that our model can work.
