Why does so much hunger exist?
One thing that I would say is hunger exists because of poverty. There are still a lot of people who are making $7.15 [per hour] in this country. The last time that minimum wage was raised was around 2007. … But also, if you think about how much you paid for ground beef, fish, cheese, milk, even a year ago, those prices have continued to go up.
There [are] a lot of people [who] are still living on that marginal poverty line and are choosing between paying bills and paying for food. Statistics show us that food is the first to go. I remember feeding people on the streets and they would say, “Hey, we had to sell our food stamps to pay our rent and we knew that you were feeding today.” And that’s why hunger exists because it’s just so hard for people to be able to make ends meet.
Do you believe you’re a changemaker?
When I think about purpose, I have been a change agent, a changemaker for well over a decade. I help a lot of celebrities start and run their nonprofits. And I’ve been someone who wants to live and exude my purpose in serving others. I think I do that [daily].
