Viral Atlanta rapper Spook drops debut project ‘SPOOK SZN’

Spook released her debut project, Spook Szn, on Feb. 5.

The collection of songs was released in the wake of her viral single, “Goldigger.”

The Atlanta artist has received co-signs from some of the city’s most prolific underground figures like Popstar Benny, Anycia and Tony Shhnow.

Trying out music worked for Spook in a great way, as her calm flow hits on hard beats with hints of Woo Da Savage, another Atlanta rapper. In a matter of months, Spook has found herself to be one of the quickest-rising artists in the female rap scene of Atlanta, and Spook Szn gave listeners a different side of her. Fans got another potential signature sound from her, which are drill beats using popular samples and the dark 808 tracks the Spook used to introduce herself to the world of music.

Shortly following the release of Spook SZN, and before performing a show with Father’s Awful Records in Atlanta, Spook stopped by rolling out to discuss her fast rise.

You went to New York and played a song for Coi Leray, didn’t you?

Yes, she heard the song, and she liked it.

You’ve brought your friend here today. I like the song y’all recently put out with RobOlu.

I didn’t think that the song was anything for real because we always made we have a whole bunch of songs that were just stupid. I didn’t know they were going to drop it, and it turns out, everybody liked it.

Congratulations on the tape dropping.

Thank you. It’s out everywhere. Spook SZN [is] on all platforms.

What was it like to finally put out the full project to the world?

I feel good. I feel like a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. Now, I can finally see and create some more.

What have you learned about the industry since “Goldigger” went viral?

I learned to be consistent. Be respectful. Keep relationships going with people. You never know who you will meet. Just stay focused. My main thing is keeping my eye on the goal at hand.

You have Tony Shhnow on this project. I remember joking with him a couple of years ago. It feels like he drops five mixtapes in five months.

What did you learn working with him?

I made the song in New York already.

I played it at my music video shoot for “HYM,” which is dropping soon. He liked the beat, and he liked the song. So I was just like, “Well, why don’t you get on it?” And he just got on it. And he sent it back to me, and the s— was hard as f—. So, I was like, “OK. This is going on the tape.”

EST Gee hopped on “Suckaz.” How did that come about?

I opened my DM, and I didn’t know the profile picture. So I’m just like, “Who is this?”

He just DM’d me and said, “Send me the ‘Suckaz’ open.” That’s all he said. I said, “OK, where?” Then, he said where, and not even a couple of days later, probably like a day and a half, I saw him tagged me on something on Instagram, and it just was there, and I was like, “Oh, OK.”

I didn’t even know that he was going to do that. We’ve barely even said more than four words to each other.

What’s your favorite song on your new project?

“NY Talk,” “We Stay High,” and “Not Cool.”

You were singing on “NOT COOL.” What was that like?

It was good because my friend Jacqueline recorded me. I wasn’t confident at first, but she was f—– with it and I trust her judgment because she’s talented. So it was no, it was pretty good.

Are you going to sing more in the future?

Probably yeah. Just a little bit. Not too crazy with it … I feel like some people have that singing ability. And then some people don’t. I’m not going to force myself to try to be anything I’m not when I can get somebody else to do it.

Do you think you’ll ever make more vulnerable songs?

Yes. Eventually, when I feel that way.

I think this tape showed a different side of you on some songs.

Yeah, and I feel like the deluxe is going to show more vulnerability.
