R&B artist K. Summerlynn is bringing something fresh and relatable to the music industry with her debut single, “Had To.” After the New Jersey native graduated from Howard University in Washington, D.C., K. Summerlynn moved to LA. to continue her passion for music and songwriting.

What makes you different from other artists?

I think what makes me different from other artists is that I’m, at the core, a writer. I grew up writing and I just fell in love with it. That’s the part that moves me. Through the whole process of my music and doing everything that I’m working on, the most exciting part for me is writing that first verse and dancing to what I wrote!

I try to paint a picture in a way that you haven’t heard before, and I try to make songs that people can connect with. I like to call my sound a blend between hip-hop and pop, with a 90’s RnB undertone. That’s why with this single, I was really excited to work with this producer named Elijah Melo, because he has that same undertone.

What led you to music?

I’ve always been around it. My mom is a jazz pianist. And when I was younger, that was how I expressed my feelings. I wrote my way through my first breakup in high school. I used to as a kid, write songs about how I wanted to be grown and go to the club. So I’ve written about any and everything. Writing has just always been there.

Let’s talk specifically about your latest project and the inspiration behind it?

So, I’ll give you a little inside scoop but leave a little mystery. It’s definitely based on a true story, but I won’t say it’s my true story. As a writer, one of the things I challenge myself to do is to be able to write about things that don’t relate to me but would still be relatable to a listener. With this song, of course, there are elements that I relate to.

The part that says, “There’s a switch that can go off inside every woman. It’s dangerous you don’t understand.” I feel like we all can relate to that — men and women. Every woman has a switch, and you don’t want the switch to go off as a man. [laughs] That’s when it’s over for you.

What do you like listening to when you are not singing?

Right now, I’m on a west coast kick! I’ve been listening to a lot of Rexx Life Raj, Blxst, G Perico, Vince Staples, Larry June. The west is winning right now on my playlists!

What is next for you?

I’m working on an EP that will be out soon. It’s going to be for the ladies again. I’m calling it a sweet & spicy collection of real-life relationship encounters. This will be my first full project; so I’m really excited about it!
