Treasure “Stat Baby” Wilson did not see any of this coming.
Fresh off of the University of Miami spring 2023 graduation stage, the young sports journalist has hosted the Internet’s hottest sports show, “It Is What It Is,” alongside legendary rappers Cam’ron and Ma$e for the past eight months. After the show’s first season, Cam’ron and Ma$e gifted Wilson a Rolex on the air. With the success of the second season, under an eight-figure deal with Underdog Fantasy, Wilson has also been given her show “Check Out The Stat,” which sheds light on female professional athletes and entertainment like WNBA champion Alysha Clark.
Recently, Wilson stopped by rolling out to speak about the whirlwind of her career moves in 2023.
What was your reaction when you found out you were getting your show?
My initial reaction was thinking this was super dope. I’ve always wanted my own show, so when the opportunity presented itself, I was very excited. “Check Out The Stat” is basically highlighting women in sports and women in the industry. I also talk about entertainment topics, and then I have a segment called “Tell Me What’s Up,” where I talk to viewers, and we discuss trending topics happening in the world.
It’s supposed to be fun, but [it] also highlights sports and puts an emphasis on highlighting women because I feel like we should have more opportunities where women in sports can get their shine and talk about what they’re doing as well.
It’s been super dope.
You were still in school when “It Is What It Is” started. What was that last semester like?
It was definitely very quick.
I started the show in March. In that time period, it was literally like, “OK. Spring break, getting ready for midterms, having to get ready for finals, graduation,” and then it was like, “Boom. Content producing, hosting show.”
It was like both things [hosting the show and going to school] at the same time. Like I said, everything was very unexpected, because I don’t think–it was a new show. So, I don’t think anybody knew what it was going to be until we started posting videos, and the traction sped up so quickly. It was crazy. It was fast, but it’s honestly been the best journey ever.
What are your favorite songs from Cam and Ma$e?
I’ve never actually been asked that.
Recently, I’ve liked Cam’s song where he’s like, “Ma, I’ve been hugging the block,” it’s “Suck It Or Not.” That one’s pretty good.
And then, Ma$e. The “Bad, bad, bad, bad boy. You make me feel so good.” I like that one. “Feel So Good.”
Those are my favorites. Obviously, ‘Oh Boy,’ too, but that’s the classic answer.
What was your reaction when you heard OJ Simpson was joining the show?
I didn’t really have a reaction because we never had a football analyst, if that makes sense. So when he and AB both became our football analysts, I was like, “Oh. This is different,” but OJ is a great football player. He was before my time, so it’s pretty cool. He has a lot of knowledge about things I didn’t even know about, [for example], telling us how he was marching with MLK and things like that. I really just learn from all of them.
This is one of the funniest and craziest convos, OJ Simpson told Mase and Cam'ron he went to the hospital to check on his heart.
