Trinidad James and hip-hop’s golden age
Trinidad James is a sensation. Whether you like it or not. The Trinidad-born, Atlanta-based rapper burst onto the scene in late 2012 with his inescapable hit “All Gold Everything” and put urban radio in a choke hold. His unique look, innumerable gold chains and rings, gold teeth, big hair, flashy sneakers and jeans — earned derision from some fans who didn’t know what to make of the rapper, something that James himself attributes to narrow-mindedness. His simple rhymes about rocking gold, not wanting to be around snitches or “f— n—-as” also garnered criticism from some so-called hip-hop purists.
